Natural Remedies To Keep Your Teeth And Gums Healthy And Your Teeth Stain-Free

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy-looking and your teeth stain-free is a good way to improve your personal appearance and your self-confidence. Besides affecting your physical appearance, keeping healthy teeth and gums can also affect how you speak and chew and can affect your body's overall health by decreasing your risk of heart disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, and kidney disease. Here are some natural remedies you can use at home to increase the health and strength of your gums and teeth and safely whiten your teeth.

Strengthen Your Gums and Teeth

Green Tea

The harmful bacteria that is present in your mouth and in the plaque that accumulates on your teeth is a main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. To prevent and reduce the amount of this harmful bacteria in your mouth, you can use green tea. Green tea contains natural fluoride, catechins, and polyphenols, which fight off and destroy this bacteria in your mouth to help prevent oral decay and gum inflammation.

Use green tea for your oral health by drinking several cups of freshly steeped tea each day. Be sure you don't add any sugar or honey as a sweetener, which can feed and increase the amount of harmful bacteria in your mouth and reduce the healthful effects of the green tea.

You can also chew a sugarless green tea gum to help fight this bacteria. Sugarless green tea gum can be found at many grocery stores and online retailers.

Guava Leaves

When plaque is allowed to build up and harden into tartar on your teeth and next to your gums, it irritates your gums, causing inflammation and your gums to pull away from your teeth. The pulling-away process causes pockets on your gums and allows more bacteria and inflammation to build up, increasing the problem and leading to gum and periodontal disease. Guava leaves provide a good way to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong, and according to several recent studies, are effective to treat and prevent periodontal disease.

Guava leaves contain guaijaverin, which provides anti-plaque protection on your teeth to prevent gum inflammation. Additionally, guava leaves fight harmful bacteria and help reduce inflammation of your gums.

To use guava leaves to keep your teeth and gums healthy, it is best to use tender leaves or twigs as part of this health regime. You can wash and chew a few guava leaves, then spit them out when they are well-chewed. You can also make a mouthwash with guava leaves. Boil four to six guava leaves with one cup of water for approximately five minutes. Strain out the leaves and allow the water to cool, then use it each day to rinse your mouth as you would a mouthwash.

Whiten Your Teeth

Along with keeping your teeth and gums healthy and looking well, you can remove stains and whiten your teeth for a clean appearance. Using harsh chemicals and bleaches can make your teeth sensitive, but you can make a natural whitening toothpaste that won't harm your teeth with this recipe.

For a natural teeth whitener paste, you will need aluminum-free baking soda and a three percent food grade hydrogen peroxide, which does not contain heavy metals as a regular hydrogen peroxide commonly sold in most grocery stores. You can find this type of food grade hydrogen peroxide in health food stores and online health food retailers. You will also need peppermint essential oil.

In this recipe, the baking soda whitens your teeth and freshens your breath, and the hydrogen peroxide whitens your teeth and fights off bad bacteria. The peppermint essential oil fights bacteria and makes the paste taste good. Combine one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of baking soda to make a paste, then add in a couple drops of peppermint and mix it well. Put a small amount of the paste onto your toothbrush, as you would toothpaste, and brush your teeth for two minutes. Follow this up with brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste.

Use this recipe once a week to keep your teeth white and stain-free.
