Why Your Dentist May Suggest All-On-4 Dental Implants Over A Traditional Denture

Losing all of your teeth can make it difficult for you to eat and speak properly. Consequently, many people who have lost all of their teeth turn to full dentures. A full denture is a prosthetic appliance that is designed to replace a full palate of teeth. The denture is custom-designed to fit the unique contours of a patient's oral cavity. Your dentist may suggest All-on-4 dental implants over a traditional denture. Here a few reasons why.

Bite Force Reduction

A traditional denture is custom-designed. However, the appliance simply rests on the gum ridge. As a result, the device does not have the support or stabilization of natural teeth. When a person attempts to chew with a conventional denture, they may be unable to enjoy fibrous or deeply-textured foods. Additionally, they may have to chew for longer periods, discouraging them from eating a varied and healthy diet.

With All-on-4s, the appliance is held in place by four strategically positioned dental implants. Since the implants are integrated with the jawbone, they stabilize the All-on-4, allowing them to function like natural teeth. Additionally, the implants are secure enough to withstand the same bite force of a natural tooth.

Movement

The traditional denture is held in place primarily by the suction force that is produced as the denture rests flush against the soft tissues of the mouth. As a result, the upper denture, although not fully immobilized, may be more stable than the lower denture since the upper denture rests against the concave surface of the roof of the mouth. Nevertheless, both upper and lower dentures may slip about as a person chews or speaks. Denture adhesives may help, but they are unlikely to alleviate all of the issues. Additionally, bits of food may become stuck in the adhesive, making the dentures less comfortable.

All-on-4 implants don't move about because the implants are secured in the bone, and the false teeth are permanently attached to the implants by screws.

Jawbone Atrophy

The fit of a traditional denture is likely to decline over time as the jawbone deteriorates from a lack of stimulation. The bone produces additional bone cells in response to the stimulation of the bite force that transferred from the teeth to the jawbone. With All-on-4 implants, the bite force is still transferred to the jawbone by the dental implants. This stimulation helps minimize bone loss.
